Technical Memo Writing Sample

Updated: Mar 14, 2023

Problem/Background:

This technical memo is a writing sample from my Advanced Writing class, and it was important because it was about taking a technical concept/project that was worked on during co-op and turning it into a concise piece of writing summarizing what happened.

Action:

Writing an effective memo is reminiscent of the work that I'd do at Beth Israel while on co-op, as it involved the development of soft skills like note taking, correctly assessing and understanding the project meetings and flow of project as well as being able to concisely summarize what happened in meetings with next steps through meeting minutes. I had to employ a lot of the same skills here with this technical memo which talks about a project that I worked on during co-op.

Result:

The result of this technical memo was an improvement in my ability to summarize projects as well as explain them in ways that were easy to understand for a variety of audience types. The result also helped me to more effectively learn the general method as to which a project is tackled, and which six sigma, lean and project management techniques happen when as the technical memo is a more summarized overview of the project with a specific audience in mind being a superior.

------

This work sample is from my Advanced Writing course at Northeastern, which focused on improving my technical writing skills as an engineer. Working across healthcare, re-insurance, finance, investing and consulting fields throughout my college career, the importance of being able to communicate effectively and cohesively is paramount. You can only implement and gain approval for your ideas as well as you can communicate them. Soft skills such as being able to write about technical concepts well are important to showcase in my portfolio because it underscores my ability to be an asset in communication methods as well my versatility in being able to communicate my ideas to internal and external audiences of different levels (e.g customers vs coworkers vs management)
